Assessment Tools
Tools for Assessing Employee Need for Basic Skills Training
It is difficult for employers to detect whether their employees have basic skill limitations. For a few tips about spotting workers with literacy needs, see Identify literacy training needs.
Many assessment tools are available to help employers determine the skill levels of current and prospective employees. Several of the most popular assessment tools are highlighted here.
WorkKeys ®
WorkKeys is a job skills assessment system measuring real world skills, developed and distributed by ACT. It is available to Indiana employers through the Indiana Department of Workforce Development and local WorkOne offices. It includes a useful "job profiling" tool: A trained facilitator works with groups of employees to determine the tasks most critical to a job and completes a skill analysis to identify the skills and skill levels required to enter the job and perform effectively. By matching the job profile information with individual scores on the WorkKeys assessments, employers can make reliable decisions about hiring, training and program development need.
A commercially-produced multiple choice test with answer booklets, color-coded answer sheets, and supporting materials. Available from McGraw-Hill/Contemporary. Used to measure learner gains in basic reading, language and mathematics.
The most widely used system for assessing adult basic reading, math, listening, writing, and speaking skills within a real-world context. Based on the critical competencies and skill areas required for success in the workplace, community and family. Useful to establish measurable goals, document learner outcomes, and report program impact to students, staff, local boards and policy makers.
COMPASS is a comprehensive testing system developed by ACT. It is computer adaptive, Internet delivered, helps place students into appropriate courses. (It is used by Ivy Tech Community College for placement). COMPASS measures students’ skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and English as a Second Language.
